A partnership project developed and delivered by the Students’ Union and the Institute of Sport, DIVERSITY CHALLENGE CUP is a football tournament with a difference. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the local and international communities of Sunderland students. Students’ don’t need to be part of a sports team to be involved and it’s free to take part. We’ll encourage all students to get involved playing or supporting their favourite teams from around the world.
Opening Ceremony:
St. Peter’s Campus | Tuesday 28 March | 12 – 2pm
This event will launch the tournament, welcome and celebrate the diverse cultural heritage and nationalities of Sunderland students. It includes welcome by SU President /VP Community and Events and introduction by Gary Bennett, refreshments from around the world and performances from student societies e.g. Nigerian society and Malaysian Society. The Sunderland Fan Museum are supporting the event giving students the opportunity to try on famous players football shirts, and see local football memorabilia. The planning and activities will be delivered by SU (and supported by IoS)
Tournament:
Silksworth Sports Complex | Wednesday 29 March, 12 – 4pm
CitySpace | Thursday 30 March | 12 – 2pm
There will be 5 teams for the tournament to go ahead (7 aside for both men’s and women’s teams). All tournament planning and sporting activities will be delivered by IoS starting with recruiting and registering participants.
Closing Ceremony:
CitySpace | Friday 31st March | 2 – 5pm
This event is to close the tournament, thank everyone for taking part, provide winners with trophy and celebrate the diverse cultural heritage and nationalities of Sunderland students. It includes welcome by SU President /VP Community and Events and introduction by Jim Montgomery, refreshments from around the world and performances from student societies e.g. Nigerian society and Malaysian Society. Participants come in their own football / fan shirts. The events planning and activities will be delivered by SU (and supported by IoS).
